5th grader wins Montgomery Co. spelling bee

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Congratulations are in order for a local fifth grader at Forest Avenue Elementary School! Jade Teel won the Montgomery County Spelling Bee Monday by correctly spelling the word "SCHNECKE".

For her talent Teel won $300 and will progress on to the state contest to be held in Birmingham.

If she wins there she's headed to Washington, D.C. for the National Spelling Bee.

Monday's spelling bee was the 50th annual event sponsored by the Montgomery VFW Post 96.

And, if you're wondering what Schnecke means you'll find it in a German pastry shop.

It's a German cinnamon bun!
