Fort Rucker soldier charged with manslaughter of child

FORT RUCKER, AL (WSFA) - A soldier at Fort Rucker faces manslaughter charges in connection with his 5-month-old son's death.

Spc. Dedrick Fisher, Sr.'s son died Monday at the Dale County Medical Center in Ozark.

After the infant died the Alabama Department of Human Resources removed a 2-year-old from the Fisher's custody.

Fisher came under investigation in November after he and his wife took the infant to military police on base saying the boy had choked during a feeding and had stopped breathing. The child was later rushed to the Dale County Medical Center and then to Birmingham's Children's Hospital.

After a preliminary investigation Fisher was charged with assault on a child under age 16 and ordered to have no contact with the family under direct supervision of his chain of command. According to officials at Fort Rucker, Fisher was allowed to see his son only under DHR supervised visits.

A General Court-Martial process in now underway and officials are seeking Fisher's pre-trial confinement.

Meanwhile, funeral arrangements for the child are underway at this time.
