Mustangs dominate Faulkner's 2009 signing class
Faulkner head coach Gregg Baker and his staff are excited about their 2009 signing class, and they didn't have to travel far to secure it. Of the 16 players the Eagles have currently signed, 12 are from the river region and 10 of those played their high school football at Stanhope Elmore.
"We are very excited about our class,'' said Baker, who also secured the signatures of a pair of Prattville Lions. "We believe we have found some very fine young men of quality character and integrity who have a desire to compete at the collegiate level. We are pleased at where we are at this point, considering our late start.''
Baker was named Faulkner's head coach last week after spending the previous two months as the interim head coach. A former collegiate lineman in his playing days at Georgia Tech, Baker was especially pleased with the help up front he feels this class will provide.
Stanhope Elmore linemen Tyler Renfroe, Zach Lee, Grant Kimbrough, Lucas Craig and Isalia Collins, along with linemen Michael Uranga and Mitchell Thornton from Prattville, all signed with Faulkner Wednesday. Two other linemen - Ryan Wilhite from Northeast Mississippi Community College and Cory Renella from Mosley High School in Panama City, Fla. - also signed.
Baker said Renfroe has "great strength and agility'' as evidenced by his success as a high school wrestler competing in the heavyweight division for the Mustangs. He finished second in the state last year and will wrestler for the state title this weekend. Kimbro, according to Baker, has the size and footwork needed to compete at the collegiate level, while Lee is "explosive and has great quickness for a big man.''
Prattvilles' Thornton was a three-year letterman and the starting center for last year's state championship team. Uranga impressed Baker with his "coachability,'' not to mention his size and strength.
Baker signed one quarterback - Joe Scott, from Northside Warner Robbins High School in Georgia. He thinks Scott will be a great asset to the program.
"Joe's a winner,'' Baker said. He is a gifted quarterback and is a student of the game. He makes really good decisions, and he has a good arm and quick feet. We're excited to have him.''
Other signees include running back A.J. Wilson, placekicker Vince Nix, free safety T.J. Wells, safety Ike Salter and linebacker Tyler Broom, all from Stanhope Elmore, and defensive back Brandon McKenzie from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.
