Push is on to start AU wheelchair basketball team

AUBURN, AL (WSFA/WTVM) - It is a sport you have to see to believe, and if some Auburn University students have their way, you'll soon be one of those believers.

The students are trying to start a wheelchair basketball team on the Plains. Currently there are only eleven wheelchair basketball teams in the nation and students want Auburn to be the twelfth.

Before the proverbial wheels get rolling on the sport, more than $150,000 in financial support from the Athletics Department would be required.

Our news partner WTVM tells us the money would pay for a coaching staff and travel.

"When they come and see it's really fast pace, really hard core hitting and lots of contact most people are really surprised at what they see," says student Jared Rhem.

Until a decision is made on whether to officially allow the new team, the students will remain busy gaining support by playing during half-time at Auburn basketball games.
