Ala. court: No money for Mexican worker's family

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - An appeals court has ruled that the Mexican family of a worker killed in an Alabama construction accident can't collect death benefits under the state's worker compensation law.

The Alabama Court of Civil Appeals ruled unanimously Friday against the wife and two children of Luis Martinez Silva.

Silva worked for Jarman Construction and died in 2003 when he fell from scaffolding at a school in Rockford.

The civil appeals court said Alabama law does not provide death benefits to dependents who live outside the United States.

The case was the first on the residency issue for the appellate court.
