Alabamians who earn at the federal poverty level pay the nation's highest state income tax bill.

Sales tax in Alabama ranks among the nation's highest and hits the poor the hardest.

About 90 cents of every dollar funding the Education Trust Fund comes from state income and sales taxes.

You didn't hear any of those statements in the state of our state address this month but each one needs to be addressed by our legislature if our state will truly realize its full potential.

Ethics reform; funding Reading, Math and Science initiatives and distance learning programs; and passing the Alabama Economic Recovery plan are important legislative pieces worthy of approval.

So too is reforming how we collect taxes and fund our budgets.

Alabama's antiquated tax system particularly hurts us most when times are toughest.
