DECATUR, Ala. (AP) - Alabama House Speaker Seth Hammett has admitted in court that he told a grand jury two different versions of how he helped state Rep. Sue Schmitz get a job with the state's two-year college system.
Hammett testified Thursday that he changed his story when he was trying to remember facts several years old before the grand jury.
Schmitz is on trial in Decatur on federal fraud charges.
She is accused of using her influence as a legislator to get the job in a program that mentors troubled teenagers and then rarely showing up for work.
Hammett testified that he helped get Schmitz the job and ordered the chairman of a state budget committee to find the money to pay for the position.
