Authorities investigating double homicide, suicide

Montgomery, Ala. (WSFA) -- Shandrea Ellis says she took a phone call she never expected late Sunday morning.

On the other end of the line: Salatho Brown, 29, the man police say shot and killed Ellis' aunt and cousin, before taking his own life.

"He just sounded the same. He didn't sound like he was upset or anything, just sounded like he was playing," Ellis' explained.

Authorities found Marthella and Latonya Wilkins dead in an apartment complex, allegedly shot Brown.

His brother rushed to the scene just after it happened.

"I never seen him the way he was today.  He wasn't himself. It just wasn't him. The tension, the anger, it just wasn't him," said William Ensley.

It's an anger the apartment complex knew all too well.  In the month and a half Brown and his girlfriend Latonya Wilkins lived there, security officers tell WSFA 12 News they filed three reports of domestic violence.

Wilkins' family says they're not surprised.

"They've just been having problems. He just got out of jail for domestic violence last month. So he didn't even stay that long," said Sherita Ellis, relative of the Wilkins.

Also, police say three children--ages 7, 11, and 13--were in the apartment at the time.

One of them, family member say, may have witnessed his stepfather take his own life.

"[The boy] was crying.  I asked him why he didn't call the police.  He said if he called the police, [Brown] was going to shoot him," Shandrea Ellis said.

"They tell you not to get into people's problems, but if you know somebody that's got domestic problems going on, you need to tell somebody," she continued.

Luckily, none of the children were physically harmed.

Authorities say one of the victim's family members came to the complex and shot at Brown before he went back into the apartment and committed suicide.

Police say that man won't face any charges.
