Plane crash in Covington Co.

COVINGTON CO., AL (WSFA) - A pilot has escaped serious injury in Covington County after his airplane crashed in a cotton field off Wages Road in the Babbie Community.

Johnathan Lord, 26, of Columbus, Georgia was operating an Aeronca "Super Champ" two passenger plane when it reportedly lost power and went down approximately 5 miles north of the airport.

Emergency crews, including the airport's fire department and crash rescue team, rushed to the scene. The Covington County Emergency Management Agency also responded.

Airport officials say Lord suffered minor injures and the aircraft was damaged. The landing gear was reportedly ripped off but the wings and fuel tanks were intact.

The scene has been cleared, the airplane has been towed to the airport and family members are enroute to meet with Lord.
