Next week Birmingham will host the Alabama High School Athletic Association state championships for the 14th straight year and this December they'll do the same for the Super 6 football championships.
This week Tuscaloosa and Auburn teamed together and submitted a bid for both of those championship games beginning next year.
Bryant-Denny stadium would be the host venue in 2011 and 2013 and Coleman Coliseum in 2010 and 2012. Auburn would host football next year and in 2012 and basketball in 2011 and 2013.
Hats off to those rival cities for trying to get the games.
Montgomery should submit a bid as well.
Our metro area now can offer 7,000 hotel rooms, a new dynamic we've never had before - and a four-star luxury hotel. Why not show off to other people in our own state how much our region has progressed.
Especially in challenging economic times, attracting the Super 6 football championships to Cramton Bowl every year would be a boon here not only for the first week of December and the kickoff of the holiday shopping season, but an invitation for those hundreds of people to come back for a return visit.
The Acadome is a great venue for basketball and in light of an unfortunate incident there this week in the regional basketball championships, would no doubt make sure security concerns were addressed in a championship games bid.
The Alabama High School Athletic Association home is right here in the capital city.
Let's be a city of champions and host the state football and basketball championships as well.
