MONTGOMERY, AL., -- Alabama Agriculture and Industries Commissioner Ron Sparks met with USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack at the semi-annual meeting of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) held in Washington, D.C. last week.

"We are fortunate to have an agriculture secretary who takes a fresh approach to helping our industry," said Sparks. "He, of course, understands the importance of agriculture, but he also understands that promotion is a major key to success. I look forward to working with him over the next two years."

Several issues important to agriculture in Alabama were discussed at length during the NASDA conference. One important issue was the economic stimulus package proposal and the effect it would have on agriculture departments, farmers, and consumers across the United States.

NASDA represents all of the 50 states in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. The majority of members are secretaries or commissioners of state departments of agriculture.
