Malzahn: QB competition wide open headed to spring

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - Auburn's new offensive coordinator is opening up the quarterback competition for spring practice.

Gus Malzahn said Wednesday the position will be wide-open and the winner will have to earn it.

Kodi Burns started the final six games last season but was inconsistent.

Neil Caudle and redshirt freshman Barrett Trotter also will be competing with Burns.

Signees Tyrik Rollison and Clint Moseley will join the mix in fall camp.

Malzahn said there won't be an established pecking order when spring practice starts March 24.

He said that kind of competition needs to happen with a new coaching staff and system.

He said his fast-paced spread offense is a quarterback-oriented system and he won't rotate passers.

Burns will be learning his third system since arriving at Auburn.
