Lagging economy strikes Elmore Co. textile plant

Wetumpka, Ala. (WSFA) -- A local textile plant is slashing more than 100 jobs in response to dismal economic conditions.

Fruit of the Loom, a corporate partner of Alabama-based Russell Athletics, announced Wednesday it will permanently close the Coosa River Yarn operation located in Wetumpka.

The phase-out production is expected to begin immediately, and will leave 138 people unemployed.

Company officials say the employees will be given a 60-day notice.

The weak economy and a downturn in demand is cited as reasons for the company's decision to close the plant.
