SBOE votes to cut positions from Ala. CITY program

DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) - The State Board of Education has voted to cut jobs in a program designed to keep Alabama students from the corrections system and steer them toward education instead.

The board, meeting in Dothan on Thursday, approved a reduction-in-force plan for Community Intensive Treatment for Youth programs across the state. None of the state's 11 CITY programs are expected to shut down, but about 30 jobs are expected to be lost.

An opponent of the cuts, board member Ella Bell, noted that jobs will be cut in the CITY program but no cut has been made to another program that offers similar training to state inmates.
