Funeral arrangements set for child killed in mound collapse

Elmore County, Ala. (WSFA) -  Visitation and funeral arrangements are now set for an Elmore County boy who died over the weekend after a dirt mound collapsed on top of him.

Family members say a visitation service for D.J. Wright is set for Tuesday evening from 6-8pm at Gassett Funeral Home in Wetumpka. Funeral services will follow on Wednesday at Gassett starting at 2pm.

Wright, 11, was playing with friends on Promise Land Drive near Redland Road in rural Elmore County Saturday afternoon when authorities say one side of the mound caved in, trapping the child under six feet of dirt.

First responders attempted a rescue but it was too late. Wright was pronounced dead at the scene.

Redland, Emerald, Wetumpka and Santuck volunteer fire departments all assisted in the rescue attempt.

Authorities say Saturday's heavy rains loosened the dirt in that mound which contributed the collapse.
