MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The Montgomery Humane Society is urging pet owners to pay close attention to their animals this holiday season.

“Don’t leave anything out. Especially for your dogs and cats, there are many items that we consume that they cannot that can become toxic very quickly like certain plants and food items,” said Steve Tears, with the Montgomery Humane Society.

Plants, like poinsettias and Christmas trees, and food like chocolate.

“Vets see a spike in emergency calls or concerned owners calling them saying, ‘My dog ate the poinsettia,' or, 'My dog got into the chocolate,’” said Tears.

Tears also said that people need to pay close attention to their pets around the holiday decorations.

“Keep them up high. I know we like to have our houses full and pretty and with a lot of people, and I know we like to keep it welcoming, but keep your pets in mind," said Tears.

Keeping those tips in mind should keep you out of the vet’s office this Christmas, but if your pets do start exhibiting some unusual symptoms, Tears said to take them to the vet immediately.
