HOUSTON COUNTY, AL (WSFA) - An 18-year-old is in custody after firing multiple shots at law enforcement officers, according to Alabama State Bureau of Investigation spokesperson Heath Carpenter.
Carpenter said several law enforcement agencies, including the Houston County Sheriff’s Office and Houston County District Attorney’s Office, attempted to serve an arrest warrant on Jaccarius Dawsey in Dothan Friday morning.
Carpenter said Dawsey, instead. led officers on a brief foot chase. During the foot chase, Carpenter said Dawsey produced a gun and fired several times at officers. Carpenter said law enforcement officials fired back at Dawsey.
Dawsey was arrested outside a nearby residence. He is charged with five counts of attempted murder in addition to the outstanding warrants.
Houston County Sheriff Donald Valenza requested the Alabama SBI conduct an independent investigation into the use of force by law enforcement.
Carpenter said no one was struck by gunfire during the exchange, but Dawsey was taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries. He has been placed in the Houston County Jail where he was placed under no bond.
