DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) - A Dothan woman is celebrating a major career milestone.
Mittie Barber has spent the last 50 years working for UniFirst - a uniform rental company. She started as a shirt presser in 1969. Today, she works in alterations.
“It’s been a journey. It’s been good and it’s been some bad, but through it all it’s been worth it,” said Barber.
Thursday, the company, coworkers, and friends celebrated her 50-year journey - honoring Barber at a surprise ceremony.
“The very first thing I noticed about her is her attention to detail,”said Clint Bell, Barber’s supervisor. “She’s the cornerstone. She’s the face that’s been here through the years.”
Mittie said a big part of her drive is her family.
“She really doesn’t like attention on herself. She loves doing for others and rarely does for herself,” said Felicia Barber, Mittie’s daughter.
Her work at the company is helping put her grandson through college at Auburn University at Montgomery.
“He’s studying sports management. I’m doing my best to help him get through,” said Mittie Barber.
Her dedication - a lesson to those around her.
“I have to do it, so get to it,” said Barber. “That’s the way I see it.”
50 years later, the hard work isn’t stopping. After the celebration, Barber went right back to work. She plans to retire at the end of next year.
