BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - It’s a major change for Birmingham drivers. Some 160,000 people drive through downtown on I-59/20 bridges.
The shutdown of the bridges will start Monday night at 9 p.m. Some of the major traffic changes will start beforehand. There will be lane changes closed east and westbound at eight o’clock. The ramp to 59/20 eastbound from I-65 will also be closed at eight o’clock.
If you are going on 5920 eastbound tonight, you will not able to get to I-65 tonight because of striping work. You will have to get off at Arkadelphia to detour to Finley to get back on the interstate.
It will be a traffic nightmare tomorrow. ALDOT officials know that. That’s why they want you to plan ahead and have your alternate route ready.
ALDOT will be monitoring traffic flow and taking calls on their hotline from motorists. Here is some more advice for drivers tomorrow.
“Drive safely. Be patient. Anticipate delays and have extra time to get where you are going.” DeJarvis Leonard, ALDOT Regional Engineer said.
Leonard said he expects the construction company to start taking down the bridges soon. That work should be completed in about two months.
If you want to keep up the traffic and changes you can call the hotline. You can set up a text message system for your phone. To look at detour maps go to the WBRC News app and click on the Traffic Tracker.
