MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - When you think about summers in Alabama, you have to deal with heat, humidity, and all those bugs. Bugs are just part of summers in the South.
A lot of folks battle the bugs themselves, others hire pest control companies to handle it but there are some things you should know before you hire someone.
“One thing you can do first is clean up your house,” said David Smitherman with the Better Business Bureau of Central Alabama. “If you leave food out or crumbs on the counter that attracts bugs. Leaving out pet food outside can attract rodents.”
There are some other things you can do to keep the bugs outside.
“You can see if you have cracks around your windows or gaps under the doors. You can close those as much as possible.”
When you think about hiring the professionals, do your research and check for online reviews. Before you sign on the dotted line, make sure you fully understand the contract. You can search for specific companies and see how they graded out on the Better Business Bureau website.
"Ask if they have liability insurance. If what they spray ruins your furniture or floors, or stains your walls, you'll want to know if you have recourse.”
Finally make sure you know what type of chemicals they are using and if they are dangerous for children or pets.
