MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Get ready for some high-flying action at a hidden gem in Montgomery.
The Lagoon Park Trail opened a few years ago. It has several miles of walking areas and trails through the woods for mountain bikers. Now they have something new. It’s a BMX track that offers a nice challenge for those who like to get after it.
“It’s the only thing like it in Montgomery,” said Ed Grimes with the Lagoon Park Trail. “We hired FlowMotion out of Anniston to build this section.”
It all got started for safety reasons.
“I was riding with my daughter and a car came flying around the corner. I decided we needed somewhere safe to ride and not interact with traffic.” Grimes said.
Now bikers, walkers, and runners from all over the River Region are getting exercise on the trail.
“It’s a great amenity for the city. This is a quality of life thing. Millennials ride bikes and want to get out and exercise and do exciting stuff.” Grimes added.
On May 18, the Lagoon Park Trail will host the Beaver Trail 5K, mountain bike time trials, and a BMX big air competition. You can get all the details and signup info on its website.
Young bikers already like what they see.
“From the top of the hill to the bottom there’s some chances to get some good air,” said BMX rider Lucas Irvin.
Organizers are hoping for a big turnout, so more folks can learn about this somewhat hidden attraction in Montgomery. There will be food and music near the Pete Peterson Lodge where most of the action will be.
"Our approach to the event it threefold,” said Grimes. “We want some awareness to let them know we are out here, and to get people riding, and a fundraiser. All the money goes to the trail."
Folks with the Lagoon Park Trail have a pretty simple motto.
“Get off your tail, and on the trail.”
