MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Aside from hiding eggs and stuffing baskets, the Easter Bunny was one busy rabbit this Easter Sunday, visiting sick children at Montgomery hospitals.
The Easter Bunny, along with Montgomery County Sheriff Derrick Cunningham, visited hospitals on Sunday, handing out toys to the children who were spending the holiday in the hospital.
“We bring the Easter Bunny out to the hospital, every Easter, to visit all the kids that are in the hospital. This is our way of being able to show the kids that we haven’t forgotten about them on this special day," Cunningham said. "It’s a way for us to be able to give back to the community and let these kids know that we’re here for them, we’re thinking about them and we love them.”
Cunningham said the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office has been visiting sick children in area hospitals on Easter Sunday for the past 15 years.
“I’ve come out every Sunday morning for the past 15 years. We hit all the hospitals and we make sure that we put a smile on their faces," Cunningham said.
According to Cunningham, the visit is a way for the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office to give back to the community.
“People will always portray us as being the bad guys, and this is the time for us to be able to let our community and our kids know that we’re their friends and we’re that person that you can lean on," Cunningham said.
