MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - It’s Earth Day, a day that’s all about protecting the environment. Auburn Montgomery is planning an event featuring Miss Alabama Callie Walker promoting her pageant platform “Let’s Talk Trash: Green Kids for a Green Planet”.
Earth Day is celebrated around the world. It's believed more than 1 billion people in 192 countries now take part in what is the largest civic-focused day of action in the world.
People march, sign petitions, meet with their elected officials, plant trees, clean up their towns and roads. Corporations and governments use it to make pledges and announce sustainability measures. Faith leaders, including Pope Francis, connect Earth Day with protecting God's greatest creations, humans, biodiversity and the planet on which we all live.
At AUM, Miss Alabama Callie Walker will be talking with students about the meaning of Earth Day to her. She'll also visit with children in the AUM Early Learning Center.
Other Earth Day events are scheduled on Troy University's campus and at Prattville Primary School.
