MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - It’s been a tradition in Autauga county for 33 years - the YMCA-FCA Christian Leadership Banquet in Prattville.
The event honors students from all seven Autauga County high schools for the Christian leadership in athletics.
Every year one student is selected as the Willis Bradford Award winner and the recipient of the Bradford Award this year was Prattville senior Brandon Butts. Butts is on the football and baseball teams for the Lions and plans to attend Auburn University and study civil engineering.
“My heart was beating real fast and when he finally said, ‘From Prattville High School, Brandon Butts,’ a big smile bust out on my face," said Butts. "I got up, and pretty sure I speed walked up here to get it because I was so happy. It’s not all about athletics, it’s about education and walking with God in your life. How important God is and how you need to keep him in your life.”
This year, former Alabama baseball player Connor Short served as the guest speaker for the event.
Butts also received a $1,000 scholarship as the Bradford award winner.
WSFA Sports Director Stephen Gunter served as the emcee for the banquet.
