TROY, AL (WSFA) - The Troy Trojans quarterback room just downsized a bit. Tuesday, Sawyer Smith announced he will be transferring from the university.
In a posted tweet, Smith thanked Troy University Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins Jr. as well as new head football coach Chip Lindsey, his staff and Smith’s soon-to-be former teammates.
Smith stepped into the starting quarterback role last season after Kaleb Barker went down with a torn ACL against Georgia State. He started the final seven games of the season and led the Trojans to a 5-2 record and a bowl win in the Dollar General Bowl.
He threw for 1,669 yards and 14 touchdowns last season. In the spring game this year, Smith threw for 99 yards and touchdown on 13 completions in 26 attempts.
Smith is a junior from Cantonment, Florida.
