DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) - The murky waters of the Auburn starting quarterback situation are now seemingly becoming clearer. Auburn head football coach Gus Malzahn has narrowed the field to two candidates: redshirt freshman Joey Gatewood and incoming freshman Bo Nix.
“One of those two guys will be our starting quarterback for our first game,” Malzahn said Wednesday at the AMBUSH Auburn Alumni Association tour stop in Dothan.
Malzahn said the two would compete over the summer and in fall camp before a decision is made before Auburn’s Aug. 31 season opener against the Oregon Ducks in Arlington, Texas.
Auburn leaves the comfort of having Jarrett Stidham in the quarterback role for the last two seasons. Stidham carried the Tigers to an 18-9 record and back-to-back bowl appearances, including the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl in the 2017-18 season.
Four quarterbacks played in Auburn’s spring game this year: Malik Willis, Gatewood, Nix and Cord Sandberg. Malzahn came out of the spring pleased with how his quarterbacks had performed.
Now with the battle down to two candidates, Malzahn will get a really good look at both under the microscope.
“Feel like both of those guys have a chance to really zero in. The more reps they get, obviously the better they’re going to be, but they showed that they can lead our offense, and both of them have a chance to be a very successful quarterback here at Auburn,” he said.
The Tigers and Ducks will open their season at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys.
