COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Folks in Columbus have had a long-time rivalry with the people of Atlanta over claiming the world’s favorite drink.

People in Columbus say the formula for the fountain drink Coca-Cola was created right here in the Fountain City before being taken to Atlanta for production and sale 133 years ago on May 8, 1886.

John Pemberton, Coke’s undisputed creator, was a practicing pharmacist in Columbus and is buried in historic Linwood Cemetery.

Those in Atlanta claim the formula was developed in Pemberton’s Atlanta lab before being walked down the street to Jacobs’ Pharmacy where it was first sold.

In 2016, the Georgia Historical Society placed a marker at Jacobs’ Pharmacy that says the iconic soft drink was created in the Atlanta lab.

That doesn’t stop Columbus residents though.

The world may never know where Coca-Cola was really born, but the Fountain City will always claim it.
