Cool ride down the Autauga Creek Canoe Trail

County Road 12: Autauga Canoe Trail

PRATTVILLE, AL (WSFA) - The summer heat is near. If you’re looking for a cool way to stay cool, Prattville is the place to be. The Autauga Creek Canoe Trail is something the whole family can enjoy.

"We try to keep it clean and clear of trash and logs so people can come and basically enjoy a float on a kayak or canoe,” said Iris Korthauer with the Autauga Creek Improvement Commission.

The group started back in 2011 when Korthauer and her husband noticed other cities had water trails, and they wanted one for their home town. Eight years later this is a cool little attraction the whole family can enjoy.

“We have two different sections of the creek you can float. The most popular and safe is when you put in behind city hall, where we are now. Four miles down you can get out a canoe park.” Korthauer said.

You can go even farther down the creek where it dumps into the Alabama River. You would get out in the Catoma Creek area.

"Ever since I was little, I've been kayaking down it,” said high school senior Kate Fallen. "There are some deep ends and some shallow ends where you will hit some rocks. Overall it's kind of slow and relaxing."

Along the trail there some areas where you can get out and swim. You will need to bring your own kayak and a paddle and then just be ready for some fun.

“Definitely use the buddy system and definitely wear life jackets anytime you're on the creek because we want you to be safe,” said Korthauer.

If you don’t have your own kayak, there is a local shop that rents them called Prattville Paddlesports.
