MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - Marcus McNeal announced that he is removing his name from the race for Montgomery mayor.

“As the platform becomes so crowded, I feel it is my duty as a leader to remove myself from the list of candidates,” McNeal said. “I also encourage some of the candidates to follow suit so that we may merge behind the strongest candidate and help move this city forward.”

McNeal, 25, announced his candidacy in February. He said he was running on a platform based on his youth to “bring transparency, awareness, and youthfulness to the leadership for Montgomery, Alabama for 2019,” according to his campaign website.

He said is not currently endorsing any other candidates, but encourages everyone to visit the candidates’ websites, view their platforms and decide what is best for the city of Montgomery.

The election is set for Aug. 27.
