OPELIKA, Ala. (WSFA) - Final preparations are being made at Robert Trent Jones at Grand National for the Zimmer Biomet Championship tournament, part of the Symetra Tour.
“We’ve got the Symetra Tour, sponsored by Zimmer Biomet. Very exciting. First year we’ve ever had that. We’ve had PGAs here, we’ve had some former LPGA events, we’ve had the NCAA’s, but never Symetra,” said RTJ Grand National Director of Golf Scott Gomberg. “We’re ready. We’ve done the biggest events there are so this is just another day for us. We are pretty excited.”
Gomberg says 144 female golfers will be coming in from all over to compete in the tournament.
“The Symetra Tour is really a gateway for these girls to get onto the LPGA Tour, so it’s pretty exciting. A lot of these girls are fresh out of college," said Gomberg. "We got some girls that went to Auburn - three Auburn alumni. We got some Alabama alumni. We got Troy State. So we’ve got girls coming from all over. If you look at the list of these players, they are all over the nation. We got a lot of people from outside the U.S.”
The golfers will be competing for a purse of $300,000, which is the Symetra Tour's highest ever.
“It’s pretty exciting to associate the largest purse ever on this tour with the Robert Trent Jones Trail, but when we do things we go big. So it’s going to be need to showcase the Robert Trent Jones Trail and Alabama for these players.”
For anyone interested in watching the tournament, the event is free and open to the public.
