MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - Every year scammers get more and more creative trying to get a hold of your hard-earned money.

The Better Business Bureau gets tens of thousands of complaints on its ScamTracker every year. It tracks the most popular scams every year.

“When looking at the most common scams we look at risk, how likely are you to being exposed to the scam, and how much money you might lose if exposed to the scam,” said David Smitherman with the Better Business Bureau.

The most common scam in 2018 happened to people looking for work, employment scams.

"They may be approached by a company that wants to offer them a really great job, for not much work, and no interview required, you just sign up.” Smitherman said.

But here’s the problem: You send them all of your personal information to get on the payroll but there’s really no job and now they have all of your information.

The second most common scam of 2018 was the online purchase scam.

“Just because it’s advertised on social media, doesn’t mean it’s real. You want to see if the company exists and has full info.” Smitherman said.

The third most common scam of 2018, the fake check scam. Usually the scammer will send you a check for too much and then ask you to wire them the money for the over payment. You send them the money and then the original check is no good.
