LEE COUNTY, Ala. (WSFA) - The funeral arrangements for an Auburn police officer who was shot and killed Sunday have been set.

It has been announced that the visitation for fallen officer William Buechner will be held at the Auburn University Arena Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The funeral service will follow starting at 2 p.m. at the same location. Internment will take place at Town Creek Cemetery in Auburn immediately after the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made through through the Auburn University Credit Union or via the GoFundMe account that has been established.

The fund was created to assist Buechner’s family and all proceeds will go to them.

“Will was a respected brother in blue, a loving husband, doting father, and faithful friend. All who knew him are deeply saddened by his loss, and extremely grateful for his service and sacrifice,” the Fund’s author stated. “While nothing will ever fill the loss they feel right now, we would like to assist with the unexpected finances they now face.”

A $10,000 goal was set, but the outpouring of support has pushed donations beyond $17,000 in less than 24 hours.

Questions about why the goal has not been raised were answered in an updated statement that reads, in part, “we are choosing to let it remain the same. We believe that it is a shining example of the generosity of our friends, family, community, and beyond.”

Buechner is survived by his wife, Sara, and two children.
