ELMORE COUNTY, Ala. (WSFA) - A man accused of raping a 5-year-old girl appeared in court Tuesday for his preliminary hearing.
According to Chief Assistant District Attorney C.J. Robinson, Steven Sarandon Barnes waived his hearing but did request a reduced bond. An Elmore County judge set a $10 million cash bond for the 28-year-old Montgomery man in April - $5 million for first degree rape and $5 million for aggravated child abuse. The judge also set a $10,000 bond for a first degree marijuana possession charge.
Elmore County District Judge Glenn Goggans ruled the bond would not change, based on the nature of the charges against Barnes and the belief that he is a danger to the public.
Barnes is accused of sexually assaulting a 5-year-old Millbrook girl. The victim was treated at the Prattville Baptist Hospital emergency room then UAB Children’s of Alabama, where she underwent surgery.
