10-year-old accidentally shot in Fairfield by teen playing with gun, sheriff says

FAIRFIELD, Ala. (WBRC) - The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office says an investigation reveals a 10-year-old was shot by accident in Fairfield late Friday night.

Deputies were called to the 300 block of 67th St. around 10:04 p.m. When they arrived, the saw a child with a gunshot wound.

The child was transported to the hospital for a non-life threatening injury. The injury has been described as a superficial wound to the shoulder.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department says those involved admitted that a 16-year-old boy who lives in the neighborhood was playing with a gun when it fell and discharged, striking the child in the back. This appears to be an accident and no criminal charges will be pursued.
