MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - Henry Ruggs III was taken in the first round of Thursday night’s 2020 NFL Draft.
The former Lee High School General was the first receiver off the board when the Las Vegas Raiders selected him with the 12th overall pick.
“I definitely did know that [Las Vegas Raiders] had a lot of interest,” said Ruggs during an introductory press conference Thursday night with the Raiders. “I talked to the coaches and they were expressing [their interest] a lot. I had a good feeling about it, and when I got the call it just came true.”
The Raiders relocate from Oakland making Ruggs the first draft selection in Las Vegas Raiders history.
Ruggs was electric during his three years at the University of Alabama. By the time his career was completed, Ruggs ranked third on Alabama’s career touchdown receptions list at 24 and averaged a touchdown nearly every four catches. He finished his career with over 1,700 career receiving yards.
This past season alone, Ruggs ran up the numbers, hauling in 40 receptions for 746 yards and seven touchdowns.
He was the fastest man at the NFL Combine and his speed looks to translate into the offensive and special teams units of the Las Vegas Raiders. He was asked what he brings to the Raiders.
“I bring explosive playmaking. Of course a great receiver, a great overall receiver, and a guy that’s definitely gonna make a positive impact,” said Ruggs.
Ruggs reunites with former Alabama Crimson Tide running back Josh Jacobs, who rushed for 1,150 yards and seven touchdowns as a rookie with the Raiders last season.
The NFL Draft continues through Saturday.
