MORRIS, Ala. (WBRC) - The Jefferson County District Attorney is investigating after a 5-year-old boy died after being shot in the face Sunday night.

He has been identified as Silas Holt of Montevallo. The shooting happened in the 8000 block of Triple Creek Circle.

Morris police said they talked to the homeowner, Jomo Johnson, who said his girlfriend, Toni Simon, and her children had come over to his house. While the Silas’ mother was giving him a bath, Johnson said he was in another room working on a handgun he had recently bought.

Johnson said he left the room for the bathroom and Silas ran out of the bathroom and found the gun sitting on the coffee table.

Silas was holding the gun when it discharged and struck him in the face, according to police. Johnson said he was out of the room for about thirty seconds when he heard the gun go off.

Silas was taken to Children’s of Alabama where he passed away Monday.
