BARBOUR COUNTY, Ala. (WTVY) - Barbour County Schools has decided not to offer sports for the upcoming school year. Head football coach Chad Martin confirmed the news to WTVY Sports Director Justin McNelley.
Martin says he understands the decision and the health and livelihood of players had to come first.
Schools are working to have athletic competitions this season but are struggling with issues related to COVID-19. The AHSAA announced last week that they were moving forward with the fall sports schedule as planned.
Officials in Greene and Sumter counties announced Monday that all fall sports will be canceled for the first nine weeks of the school year.
These sports include football, volleyball and cross country.
While the football team has struggled on the playing field, Martin says he felt like they were going to surprise people this year.
The Jaguar basketball team made the state championship game last year before falling to Calhoun.
On the school’s website it says the school fielded teams last year in football, basketball, volleyball cheerleading and track.
