TROY, Ala. (WSFA) - Kimber Manufacturing opened shop in Troy more than two years ago. And now is making plans to make a big move to the area.
Gunmaker Kimber Manufacturing aimed at Troy two years ago with the hope it would do well. It has, so well in fact that the company’s corporate office will move in sometime in 2021.
“It was more of they wanted to see how things were going to go originally with the operations and then bring everything to Troy and that’s what they decided to do," said Troy City Councilman Marcus Paramore.
Kimber is currently in Yonkers, New York.
Kimber leaders say they’re moving aggressively with their hiring. They’re looking for technicians, machinists and design engineers.
As part of the original agreement with local and state leaders, the average pay is around $22 per hour.
It’s not clear how many new jobs corporate will bring, but Kimber had plans to hire more than 300 when it opened two years ago.
“I think it speaks to three things, is our business-friendly environment and our strong support of the Second Amendment, and number three is our hard-working people," said Rep. Wes Allen.
Considering the times with the economy and COVID-19, there is some surprise Kimber decided to make this move, but local leaders say they’ll take it.
“But in the city of Troy this is probably the biggest announcement since Kimber decided they were coming, the distillery decided that they were coming and things of that nature," Paramore said.
With Kimber’s announcement, the economic road in Troy and Pike County just got a little more prosperous.
Kimber makes firearms for individuals, law enforcement and the military.
