MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - Alabama State University’s athletics department help kicked off the holiday season Wednesday by surprising a local non-profit organization that’s always looking to help those in need.

ASU athletes and Academy Sports+Outdoors partnered to surprise representatives of Montgomery’s Friendship Mission with gifts and gift cards for those in need.

Friendship Mission helps place more than 300 people a year into emergency shelters and provides more than 40,000 meals annually.

Academy pulled $1,000 worth of gifts from Friendship Mission’s wish list, including items like new clothes, shoes, sports equipment, camping and hunting gear, then waited to reveal the surprise.

When those with Friendship Mission arrived at the store to pick up the gifts, Academy and ASU’s athletes had another $2,250 worth of Academy gift cards waiting!

ASU said it decided to give to Friendship Mission because its athletes have enjoyed working with the organization in the past whether through its offering of emergency shelter space, food, or other basic needs.

Academy has a partnership with the Southwestern Athletic Conference, or SWAC, which has helped foster youth outreach and mentoring programs.
