TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) - Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian has taken the head coaching position at University of Texas at Austin.
The announcement was made on UT’s Twitter page Saturday afternoon, just hours after Tom Herman was fired from the job.
Sarkisian first arrived at Alabama as an analyst in 2016 before he was promoted and served as the offensive coordinator during the 2017 National Championship game. In 2017 he was hired on as the offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons, where he spent two years before returning to the Alabama coaching staff as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in January of 2019.
The Alabama offense has thrived under Coach Sark, with a season that broke records and included three of the top five recipients of Heisman Trophy votes.
Sarkisian says he will remain with the Tide to coach them through the CFB National Championship game against Ohio State on January 11.
“I made a commitment to Coach Saban and these players to see that through in the championship game,” Sarkisian said during an introductory press briefing with UT, “and then directly after that, I’ll be in Austin.”
