MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - While it may be a new year, the COVID-19 challenges facing the State of Alabama remain the same. Four days into 2021 and the state’s already amassed nearly 13,000 new COVID-19 cases.

Monday the Alabama Department of Public Health reported 2,161 new cases, which is far lower than the seven day case average of 3,742, likely due to a break in testing over the holidays.

As of Sunday, hospitals across the state were treating a record 2,885 patients with the virus. The number of patients requiring critical care widely escalated in December, raising the seven-day hospitalization average by 1,093 by the end of the month. A total of 34,373 patients have been hospitalized in Alabama since the pandemic began.
