Lee County sheriff celebrates 45 years with the sheriff’s office
LEE COUNTY, Ala. (WTVM) - The Lee County sheriff is celebrating 45 years of working for the sheriff’s office.
Sheriff Jay Jones said he first got on the payroll in January 1976. There were only 17 employees in the entire office. Now, there’s nearly 180 employees.
One of the biggest changes he’s seen over the years is technology. Jones said he’s also seen the expectations of law enforcement officers become higher. He’s been sheriff since January 1999 and said he plans to run again in 2022.
“I have to say I’ve been so fortunate,” said Jones. “I owe a great debt to the people of Lee County to have trusted me and entrusted me with this job. Certainly, I would like to continue. I love my job and I love the people I work with. It’s the best job in the world.”
Jones said he first began with the sheriff’s office as a student intern before being hired full time as a corrections officer. He then moved to the patrol division and then to investigations until he was elected sheriff.
