BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - The American Red Cross in the Alabama region has heard from people concerned that donating your plasma will affect your body’s antibody count.

But Red Cross assures donors that’s not the case. Your body can make more antibodies, and a donation takes out only a small amount.

One donation can save up to three lives.

“About two percent of the population is eligible to donate convalescent plasma,” said Annette Rowland, Director of Communications. “So when you think about these COVID cases, two percent isn’t a lot of people. Finding those donors is like finding a needle in a hay stack according to our chief medical officer.”

You must have recovered from a verified case of COVID-19 to be eligible to donate plasma.
