Multiagency alliance to combat human trafficking in Alabama

Multiagency alliance formed to combat human trafficking in Alabama

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall and the Family Sunshine Center announcing a multiagency alliance to combat human trafficking.

The Alabama Anti Human Trafficking Alliance will share resources to arrest and prosecute human traffickers and provide assistance to victims.

The alliance will include the U.S. attorney’s offices for Northern, Middle and Southern Districts, Homeland Security Investigations, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Family Sunshine Center, Wellhouse, Ashakiran, West Alabama Human Trafficking Task Force and Poarch Band of Creek Indians.

Marshall called human trafficking a modern form of slavery.

“Most notably, the criminal cases are located in counties with interstate or major highways that connect Alabama to known trafficking hubs in places like Texas, Georgia and Florida. Clearly, the only way to stop human trafficking is to hit them head on with a united force of professionals across our state committed to rooting them out and bringing them to justice,” Marshall said.

The alliance is being funded by a U.S. Department of Justice award.

In October, the Alabama Attorney General’s Office and the Montgomery Family Sunshine Center were awarded $2,900,455 in federal funding for a period of three years to create a task force to combat human trafficking statewide.

The alliance says that under the new partnership, jurisdictional loopholes in capturing and prosecuting human traffickers will be closed, and victims will be afforded short-term and long-term support services.

The Attorney General’s Office will provide a special agent to proactively investigate human trafficking cases statewide and provide support to law enforcement in investigating and prosecuting cases. The office will also make an assistant attorney general available for case investigative guidance, victim and witness advocacy, and will coordinate data and law enforcement committee meetings.
