Gov. Ivey gets second dose of COVID-19 vaccine

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - Gov. Kay Ivey has received the final dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

She, along with Alabama State Health Officer Scott Harris and State Chief Medical Officer Mary McIntyre got their final dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine Tuesday morning before briefly speaking with the media outside Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery.

The three received their first dose on Dec. 21 and needed a second shot for the vaccine to be fully effective.

Ivey urged the state’s residents to be patient despite the vaccine’s slow rollout saying the state is “working to get vaccine in the arms of people as soon as the supplies come in.”

Alabama, with a population of 5 million people, has been allocated approximately 271,000 doses of the vaccine. It’s administered approximately 87,000 of those to frontline medical workers and in nursing homes, so far.

Harris said demand currently far outweighs the supply when it comes to the vaccine but added everyone will eventually have access to it. He said the state doesn’t even know how much of the drug it will get in the next shipment , making planning even more difficult.

The state is about to expand the list of those who are eligible for vaccination to people 75 years or older, and first responders, including law enforcement and firefighters. Nearly 350,000 people in the state of Alabama would qualify for a vaccine at 75 years old and older.

The state has set up a hotline for those who qualify to make an appointment. They have urged only those who qualify to call the hotline. To schedule an appointment for the free COVID-19 vaccination at a county health department, individuals may call the ADPH toll-free phone number at 1-855-566-5333 from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., seven days a week.

Vaccination locations can be viewed at this link, and additional specific information, such as what to bring and what to wear, will be provided when appointments are made.
