MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - As the weather warms up, more farmer’s markets start to open up. It’s a great way to support farmers and get some great homegrown food.

“There is no better place to purchase fresh local products whatever it is produce, or meat, or nuts than at an Alabama Farmer’s Market,” said Ellie Watson with Sweet Grown Alabama.

Sweet Grown Alabama is a non-profit foundation that started in 2019. It connects consumers to Alabama-grown foods and products. The goal is to get more folks to consider Alabama-made products.

“Studies show when you shop local 60 cents from every dollar stays in your local community,” Watson added.

The great thing about these farmer’s markets is that face-to-face experience.

“You get to connect with the farmer who grew your product so you can ask the farmer how the product was grown or why they raised it a certain way,” Watson said.

Plus during the middle of a pandemic just makes good sense.

“During the pandemic, we’ve seen the supply chain break down,” Watson said. “So, sometimes it’s been hard to find the products you’re looking for. When you shop local you shorten the supply chain.”

It’s a great way to get food picked right from the fields of Alabama straight to your plate.
