AUBURN, Ala. (WTVM) - According to Auburn police, a suspect is in custody after a hostage situation on Ogletree Road.

Around 9 a.m. on October 11, Opelika police responded to a domestic violence call on Opelika Road. However, before authorities arrived at the scene, the suspect left. Police were able to track him to his home, where the hostage incident occurred.

Multiple officers and a SWAT team were outside the suspect’s house on Windway Drive, where police say the suspect barricaded himself inside, armed with a gun, with his three children, one being an infant.

According to Auburn officials, they deployed a SWAT team and negotiator to contact the subject. He cooperated with law enforcement, handed over his children, and ultimately surrendered.

Auburn Assistant Chief Michael Harris says the threat to the public has been resolved, and the scene is now cleared.

“We deployed our SWAT team and negotiators to establish contact with the subject. He did talk with us and cooperated and ultimately, we were able to negotiate the release of his children and his peaceful surrender,” said Harris.

As a precaution for the incident, Ogletree Elementary School was secured - though the school never faced any threats.

The victim of the initial domestic violence called suffered minor injuries, but the children were unharmed.
