HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - At 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday students were handling a firearm and ammunition in a restroom at McDonnell Elementary School.

While the students were messing around with the firearm, it discharged. No one was injured.

Once the students’ teacher and administration responded to the sound of the firearm it was immediately contained. The parents/guardians of the students were contacts and ‘will begin working with the District to implement disciplinary consequences consistent with the Behavioral Learning Guide.’

The district will work with law officials to investigate how the students were able to get the firearm and bring them to school.

Parents of students at the school say the school did not inform them of the situation until they came to pick up their children due to the early closures from the weather.
