Payton Walker

Payton Walker comes to WAFF 48 from The Tar Heel State where she grew up in Charlotte and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Her love of journalism began in high school when she started working for Charlotte Christian School’s broadcasting team, Knights Knews. Her passion for the field only continued to grow as she advanced into her collegiate career.

At UNC-CH, Payton served as an anchor and reporter for both of the university’s primary newscasts: Carolina Week and Sports Xtra. Her efforts won her several awards through the Hearst Journalism Awards Program and the Radio Television Digital News Association of the Carolinas, and she was selected as UNC-CH’s Outstanding Graduating Senior in Broadcast Journalism.

In addition to her collegiate experience, Payton gained real-world insight through her internships at both the NBC and CBS affiliates in her hometown of Charlotte.

Some of her accomplishments include interviewing Fox News host Tucker Carlson, covering Carolina vs. Duke basketball games and the PGA Championship, digging deep into relevant issues like disabilities in the workforce, NFL concussions and collegiate grade inflation, interviewing former professional athletes (Antawn Jamison, Kevin Donnalley and Eugene Robinson), as well as developing innovative pieces on a wide range of fun topics in the local area.

You can catch Payton anchoring on Saturday and Sunday mornings and reporting out in the field on weekday mornings. When she’s away from the station, you’ll find her meeting with friends over lunch, playing piano, brushing up on her French, going on walks and volunteering at her church.
