Drug probe at Alabama Statehouse kept under wraps

State legislators have requested an investigation and review of personnel practices since learning that a Statehouse employee kept his job for nearly two years after he
was questioned about leaving marijuana and drug paraphernalia in one of their offices.

Lawmakers also say they want to know why they were not informed of the incident involving maintenance worker Lorenza Hooks for years and wonder if a cover up and more people were involved.

State Rep. Alvin Holmes, a Democrat from Montgomery, said he believes drugs may have been provided to others at the Statehouse.

The drugs were found in a backpack in former state Rep. Bobby Humphryes' office in December 2006. Hooks admitted that the backpack was his, but said the drugs and drug paraphernalia were not.
